On Wednesday, March 6th, the UBC microbrewery viability committee presented to AMS council after months of deliberation. They presented a plan to set aside funds over the next 4 years in order to finance the construction of a UBC Microbrewery as part of the 2017 UBC Farm project. Needless to say, we are very excited about this.

Monthly beer tasting—Nov 2011
In beer tasting, ubc on November 14, 2011 at 6:21 amThe turnout for the beer tasting was pretty good considering it was our first one that we actually advertised early enough to give people some notice about the event.
And here are the beers we drank, with some commentary. Read the rest of this entry »
Making beer with fresh hops from the Farm!
In ubc on September 15, 2011 at 6:23 amAugust 30
The hop yard at the UBC Farm is in her second year now, and has been a project we’ve heard of for the past year or so. In case you didn’t know, hops are important ingredients in beer making. You know that bitter kick you get from drinking a good ol’ IPA? Comes from hops. Oh yeah. It’s the good stuff. And we have it growing right here on campus! Amazing.
Scott Bell, who started up the hop yard at the UBC Farm two summers ago and an enthusiastic home brewer himself, gave us a little tour of the hop yard.
Apparently hops are extremely viscous, and will attack any plants nearby, so do give it a lot of space both up and down. Their roots have a huge undergroud network.
There are a couple of varieties grown. Cascades, Golding, Nugget and some others. I can’t remember now, but I do remember being pretty impressed with the selection.
Be stoked for the upcoming year!
In ubc on August 16, 2011 at 9:06 pmHello beer guzzlers!
I hope your summers are closing up nicely, because it’s time to get stoked for school! We’ve have a jam packed year planned ahead of us, and we’re super excited! Just to let you in on some of the things we’re planning next, we’ve got
- regular brewing sessions
- monthly speakers
- monthly home brew exchanges
- collaborative events with other clubs
and more!
I know it’s pretty brief and vague for now, but details are getting hashed right now, and we’re all so very excited!
Back to planning!
Love,
Kathy
First brew sesh of the summer!
In ubc, vancouver on July 15, 2011 at 8:21 pmExciting things are happening! Today’s the first day that we’re using the domain name brub.ca, making us way more legit than when we were just using brubc.wordpress.com. And we’re having our first summer brewing session this Sunday, July 17! Here’s the facebook event:
http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=112159682210734
We’ve planned for it to be an outdoors brewing occasion, so hopefully Vancouver gets all her rain out in the next two days because we’re hoping for some sunshine and beer. Making.
Weve got ingredients for an extract/ grain version of the wheat beer, and it’ll be the first time we’re using liquid yeast! We never had the capacity to use liquid yeast because we were basically operating out of a closet in some grad society’s room last year, but we will have a room in the SUB next year! Hurrah!
Once again, membership is only $10, which gets you in to the beautiful world of home brewing, and meet other fellow UBC homebrewers. And why not start your membership early and get one this Sunday! See you then!
